Last Thursday evening, before the ice onslaught shut down the county, the middle school Cougars closed out their regular season with a pair of one-sided victories over visiting Heritage Christian, from Owensboro.
This was the second meeting of these teams, with the Cougars traveling to Owensboro back in December and coming away with two wins. The eighth-grade game there was a blowout, but the seventh-grade contest was nip-and-tuck all the way before the Cougars pulled out a 38-34 win.
There was no drama, though, this time around as the seventh-graders led from start to finish and won going away, 51-19 to finish the season at 15-9.
The eighth-grade game was even more one-sided as the Cougars held the visiting Rebels to just 12 points the whole game in a 56-12 joyride. The eighth-grade Cougars finished their season at 19-7.
SEVENTH GRADE GAME
Grayson County started the game by scoring the first 11 points, seven of them from Jack Davis, who was playing for the first time since breaking a bone in his foot against Breckinridge County. The Cougars led by eight, 14-6 at the end of the first quarter.
Grayson County hit three three-pointers in the second period, one by Caleb Ray and the other two from Ryan Johnson, to build a 14-point lead, 25-11 with 22:03 left in the half. The Cougars then scored the last four points of the period to lead by 16 points, 29-13 at the half.
When the Cougars opened the third quarter with 12 unanswered points, capped off by Johnson’s third three-pointer of the night, the Cougars held an insurmountable 28-point edge, 41-13. They led 41-15 at the start of the fourth quarter.
Ten Cougars got in on the scoring. Johnson led all scorers with 11 points, and he also led the team with three steals. Davis finished with nine points, as did Ethan Carter. Rylee Shoemaker had seven points and led the team on the boards with six rebounds.
Austin Clark scored four points, while Spencer Sharp had three. Four players, Josh Embry, Eli Thomas, Trenton Godby, and Lincoln Nichols all scored two points to complete the scoring.
EIGHTH-GRADE GAME
Hunter Shiarella put the Cougars in front to stay with a three-pointer less than a minute into the game. The Rebels’ Jackson Burke followed with a pair of free throws to make it 3-2 at the 4:46 mark. That would be as close as Christian would be the rest of the night.
Grayson County closed out the first quarter with 12 unanswered points, then scored the first four points of the second period to build a 17-point lead, 19-2 with 4:06 left in the first half. Blake Boswell’s three pointer with 2:36 left stopped the Cougars run and completed the first half scoring. The Cougars led by 14 points, 19-5 at the break.
The Cougars then put the game away in the third quarter, putting on an 18-2 run to lead by 30 points, 37-7 at the 2:32 mark. They led by 31, 39-8 at the start of the fourth quarter.
Twelve players scored for the Cougars, led by Conner Schultz and Dustin Woosley, with eight points each. Woosley added six rebounds, while Schultz had three steals. Shiarella and Hunter Young had seven points apiece.
Five players, Beau Dennis, Gerritt Dennison, Dean Reed, Bryce Horn and Austin Basham all scored four points. Dennis added six rebounds and Dennison had five. Trey Goff, Dean Reed and Caleb Ray scored two points each to cap the scoring.
