Playing in their first game of the season Saturday morning at Cougar Gym, the Lady Cougar freshman team put a 47-30 whipping on the visiting Edmonson County LadyCats.
The Lady Cougars got balanced scoring from eight players and put two of them into double figures as they led from start to finish in the game.
A Jodi Decker rebound basket and a Grace White lay-in put the Lady Cougars up 4-0 with 4:51 left. Leading by two, 6-4, Breanna Minton hit a three-pointer and White added another lay-in to give the Lady Cougars a seven-point lead, 11-4 with 3:26 left in the opening period.
Four straight LadyCat points pulled Edmonson back to within three points of the lead, 11-8 at the 1:12 mark, but Hannah Salsman scored on a put-back basket with 51 seconds left, then Allie Horton hit a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left to give the Lady Cougars a 15-8 lead heading into the second quarter.
Grayson County took nine-point leads three times in the third quarter, the last time coming at 21-12 with 3:55 left, but the Lady Cats answered with six straight to cut the lead to three points once more, 21-18 with 1:55 left in the half.
Salsman then buried a three at the 1:46 mark, and Sarah Pierce followed with a three of her own to push the lead back to nine points, 27-18 with 35 seconds left. A rebound basket by Edmonson’s Peyton Martin with three seconds left cut the lead to seven points, 27-20 at the half.
The Lady Cougars came out on fire defensively in the third quarter, forcing six straight empty Edmonson County trips, including four steals. That allowed Grayson County to score the first eight points of the period to build their lead to 15 points, 35-20 at the 4:02 mark.
A Horton lay-up with 35 seconds left pushed the Lady Cougar lead to 17 points, 41-24, but Caitlin Simon closed out the third-quarter scoring with a lay-up to make it a 15-point game, 41-26 as the fourth quarter began.
The Lady Cougar defense again held the LadyCats scoreless for nearly five minutes in the final period and took their largest lead of the day, 21 points at 47-26. Edmonson County then scored the final four points of the game to make the final score a bit more respectable.
Martin led the LadyCats with 10 points. Decker led the Lady Cougars with 11 points, while Pierce had 10 and led the team with three steals. Salsman just missed double figures with nine points, while Minton finished with five.
Horton and White finished with four points each, and White led the Lady Cougars on the boards with nine rebounds.
Shelbi Pendergest and Taylor Glenn had two each to complete the Grayson County scoring.
