A former Detective with the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department was indicted on Tuesday by Grayson County’s Grand Jury on felony and misdemeaner charges.
Terry Blanton, of Edmonson County, resigned from his post with GCSD on March 14, 2012 as a result of what Sheriff Rick Clemons called “behavior unbecoming of an officer.”
Shortly thereafter, 48-year-old Blanton was arrested by Kentucky State Police and charged with hindering prosecution or apprehension in the second degree, an offense which he is accused of having committed in late April of this year when he allegedly helped a Leitchfield woman evade arrest who was being sought by KSP for complicity to burglary.
The charge is a Class A misdemeaner, punishable by up to one year in jail if convicted.
Blanton was briefly lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center before being released on a $500 unsecured bail bond with the condition that he have no contact with law enforcement unless for official business.
KSP continued investigation into Blanton’s behavior, and turned the case over to tehir Drug Enforcement/Special Investigations West branch.
The charges against Blanton have now expanded to include theft of a controlled substance and trafficking in a controlled substance (hydrocodone) in the second degree, first offense. Both of these are felony charges. These suspected crimes were allegedly committed between September 2011 and April 2012.
Blanton pleaded not guilty to each of the three charges on Tuesday. A pre-trial conference will be held on Tuesday, December 18.
Prior to his resignation from GCSD, Blanton had served in law enforcement for nearly two decades. He was an eight-year veteran of the local sheriff’s deaprtment.
