The 106th Kentucky State Fair kicked off in Louisville Thursday with Grayson County hosting the opening day reception for the second year in a row.

Several county residents were dressed in bicentennial clothing for the occasion to mark the 200th birthday of the county.

The opening ceremonies included live music by the Thoroughbred Chorus, an introduction of the Kentucky County Fair Queens, and a presentation of flags by the Kentucky National Color Guard.

Governor Steve Beshear presided at a ceremony opening.

Opening remarks were given by state and local officials, including Beshear, Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson, and Secretary of the Tourism, Arts, and Heritage Cabinet Marchete Sparrow.

After the 61 Kentucky County Fair Queens were each introduced festivities continued on the second floor where Grayson County hosted the reception in the ballroom

As beauty queens and state dignitaries gathered for the festivities in the ballroom, Grayson County residents fully clad in their bicentennial costumes were plentiful.

Many local businesses executives, as well as politicians, were present at the special gala.

Grayson County Judge Executive Gary Logsdon opened the reception with a speech, and the Fiscal Court, Sheriff Rick Clemons and Jailor Darwin Dennison supported the judge.

The McDonald’s Road Band entertained the crowd with live bluegrass music.

“We are overwhelmed with the opportunities this allows our county,” said Logsdon. “This puts our county out in front and shows those in Frankfort and Jefferson County that we support other regions in the state.”

The ceremony was open to the public but the reception was invitation only.

The Kentucky State Fair began Thursday and runs through Sunday, August 29 in Louisville. For more information, visit www.kystatefair.org.
