The Grayson County Rotary Club sponsors the event every year. Proceeds from the competition benefit charitable organizations in the county.
On July 16 and 17 visitors will migrate to the field beside Rough River dam to listen to musicians play against one another in various categories.
Top winners in each class will be awarded with prize money.
The harmonica class is going to be the first group to compete on Friday, beginning at 7 p.m. CST, with old time banjo starting off the contest on Saturday at 10 a.m. A fiddle-off will take place on Saturday night, announcing the winner of the top prize, the Governors Cup.
President and coordinator Brent Miller said a special ceremony would be held this year, starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday, honoring former MC Leo Mudd as well as Rotarian Roger Bessinger. Both men died last year.
"They are going to be missed," Miller expressed. "They both put a lot of years in helping out with the contest. Leo was an MC for us for 35 years (Kevin, Leo's son, will carry on the duties of his father as MC for the contest), and Roger worked with the sound system, setting up mikes and being our stage manager. The ceremony on Saturday will honor the two of them for their efforts."
Every year over 100 total competitors from Missouri, Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Virginia and Kentucky participate in the fiddlers contest.
"I expect the same turnout for this year," Miller explained. "It is a good time for the community to come out and enjoy a lot of good music, and hear some of the best musicians in several states compete to see who is champion."
