On Friday morning the Los Mexicanos Grill sold its first beer to Doug Darnell with little fanfare for the big event.
There was no celebration as Darnell paid the bill for his food and alcohol.
“This has been a long time coming. It is good to have a drink with your meal,” said Big Clifty resident Darnell. “I have been watching for this and glad it is finally here.”
Owner of the Mexican restaurant Angel Roman said they received the first delivery of beer two days ago but Friday was the first day the alcohol was on the menu.
“We have started selling today and it is just beer right now,” said Roman. “We had a hard time getting the license but we got it and now people can come in and have a drink if they want.”
Roman did admit he was a little nervous being the first business in town to sell alcohol.
“It is always hard to be the first but we are selling it,” said Roman. “Hopefully soon we will be able to sell margaritas and other drinks but I don’t know when yet. “
Liz Schmitt was one of several customers of the restaurant that was glad to see the day alcohol could be sold legally arrive.
“I am from Louisville and not really a big drinker but when you come to a Mexican restaurant its nice to have a margarita with your food,” said Schmitt. “I think this is great. I have a house on the lake here and will come back to this restaurant.”
China King had advertised its intent to sell alcohol during the first week of June but because of clerical problems they are unable to sell alcohol at this time.
On March 23, city voters approved a measure to allow restaurants that seat 100 people or more to sell alcohol by the drink and the city council followed that move by approving the ordinance during the April 19 meeting.
Now three months after the vote the first beer has been sold in Leitchfield.
