With a fireworks display on both lakes Saturday night and one in Peonia Friday, Grayson County skies were lit up with fireworks for the annual patriotic celebrations.
“We come down to the lake every year and look forward to the fireworks and other events.” said Louisville resident Linda Clark. “We always know there will be something going on down here and because we have a vacation home on Nolin is it a great way for us to spend the holiday. This year it was better because of the fireworks here at Wax. Usually we go to the one on Friday night at the Knights of Columbus and then go over to Rough River but this year we heard about these at Nolin. ”
Clark’s 10-year-old daughter Julie was impressed with the fireworks over the lake.
“I think it is neat to watch the fireworks as they go over the water,” said Julie. “Sometimes you can see the lights in the lake.”
This is the first year the Friends of Nolin Lake have hosted an official display at the Wax marina and are thrilled with the turnout.
“The whole event was excellent both in the water and on land,” said Nolin Lake Lead Park Ranger Deryck Rodgers. “We had between 200 and 300 boats on the water and about 1000 people watching from the shore.”
Rodgers reported there were no accidents and everyone had a great time.
“When you get that many boats in the same location at the same time it can be tricky but everyone was safe and had a great time,” said Rodgers. “Hopefully there will be the funds available next year to do this again.”
The fireworks display was paid for by local sponsors and supported by several volunteers and elected officials.
“We would like to thank the Wax Fire Department, Kentucky Fish and Wild Life, the Grayson County Sheriff, the Corp of Engineers and Grayson County Judge-executive and Fireworks team that shot off the works,” said Friends of Nolin Lake President Glenna Black. “It impressed me the way people helped out. It was a really great turnout and a great family event. After all that is what the holiday is all about.”
There were two local bands, United and the Jack Thomas Band as well as the winner of the Battle of the Bands from Owensboro, Insulated, which provided live entertainment with music ranging from country, rock, to contemporary Christian.
Friends of Nolin Lake are looking forward to the annual NolinFest that will take place the weekend of August 6 and 7 at Moutardier Recreation Shelter.
