With lass than two weeks to finalize the schedule, organizers for the 2010 Leitchfield Freedom Fest are busy setting plans in place for the fun-filled weekend.

The second annual festival has replaced the long standing Ice Cream Festival held on the second weekend in July with a fireworks display as the main attraction. The three-day event offers more than just carnival rides and fireworks.

This year’s the event will begin at 5 p.m., Friday, July 9 and run through Sunday afternoon, July 11 with the fireworks display just as part of the fun instead of the main attraction.

The Grayson County Middle School will again serve as the home grounds for the Freedom Fest and Friday night’s schedule will include traditional events such as Derby City Amusements carnival rides, interactive games, the 4H Freedom Run, “Meet The Candidates” night and live musical concerts.

Some new additions to the festival that have just been finalized and announced are: Swim Night at the city pool beginning at 5 p.m. Friday with a $1 admission and Swim Day at the city pool on Saturday with a $1 admission fee.

Event Organizer Ken Roberts is pleased to announce the Boombah/Midstate/South Dixie All-Star Softball Exhibition on Friday night at dusk. The game will be played under the lights at the middle school Babe Ruth Field.

The exhibition game will feature members from former ASA Class A National Champion softball team. Big-time softball will be displayed in Leitchfield as players swat 400-foot homeruns and unbelievable infield antics.

The candidates that are running in the 2010 November election will be offered a unique opportunity by setting up a booth and meeting voters during the “Meet the Candidate Night on Friday.

“A lot of things are going on this weekend and Saturday’s activities will begin with the annual Fireman’s Pancake Breakfast at the firehouse and Carnival rides will continue all day,” said Roberts. “This year we are moving the beauty pageants outdoors on the main stage and offering live music. “

There will be an outdoor Arts and Crafts fair, food vendors and the annual Car and Bike Show on the front lawn of the school.

Freedom Festival fun will continue on Sunday with the carnival rides and vendors set up at the middle school grounds.

This year a special “Community Fellowship” is planned on the lawn of the football field at 12:30p.m., giving those who choose to attend their church services time to come out and participate in the final day’s events.

“We thought this was a way to continue what we started last year with the Sunday event and make it more successful by not interrupting local church services,” said Roberts. “Live music will be offered on the main stage and carnival rides will continue as we encourage everyone to bring a picnic lunch and spend time in fellowship with others of our community during our final day of this annual celebration.”
