Final preparation has begun for Relay for Life 2010, $86,240 was the magic number collected so far during Bank Night on Monday night.

Relay for Life is held every year in June around the Grayson County High School football field (located off of Highway 62 in Leitchfield). This year’s festivities will begin at 7 p.m. on June 18, and continue throughout the night until early in the morning of the next day.

Bank night (located in the basement of Wilson Muir Bank’s main branch, Leitchfield) is always held the Monday before Relay each year to get all fundraising teams organized on what paperwork they need for the big event, gives them a chance to turn money in they have collected so far, get t-shirts for each member and also find out where there campsite will be at the high school track.

Relay Chairperson Michele Heavrin has been involved with Relay for Life fundraising in Grayson County for over six years.

“Teams holding money along the way have the opportunity to deposit that,” Heavrin explained. “It also is a time for teams to get their itinerary and schedule of events. People get to check in to see where they are financially, as far as their each individual goal. Bank night went really well. A lot of teams were absent, but the number for the county looked very positive. We have over $73,000 turned in from teams, and with corporate in-kind team registrations we are at $86,240.”

The approximated goal for Grayson County fundraising 2010 is over $120,000.

According to Heavrin, as of Monday night, 41 teams have signed up for Relay for Life fundraising this year so far. She did however encourage individuals who were not part of a team to come out and take part in Friday night’s activities also.

“This night is not only for teams or people fundraising,” Heavrin urged. “It is for people in the community in general. Relay for Life Night is for anyone who has been affected by cancer in any shape or form. People think because they are not on a team, that they cannot come out on Relay night that is not the case. Come be a part of something fun filled for all ages. It is a pleasant and enjoyable experience.”

Teams can start setting up and decorating campsites anytime after 1 p.m. on Friday. The deadline for all vehicles to be off of the track, and for the walkway to be cleared is by 5:30 p.m.

Opening ceremonies are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

For anyone who still does have shirts, or a campsite designated, they are asked to arrive early on Relay night.

Participants can also contact Michele Heavrin by phone at 270-259-2600, Missy Mudd at 270-259-9622 for questions or comments.
