The Farmers Market (Indian Hills Shopping Center, Leitchfield) opens in the spring and remains operational until Halloween, or until growers run out of produce to sell to the public.
Each year an official grand opening ceremony is held to introduce growers to the community, and offer affordable prices to customers on home-grown products.
Grayson County Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources Jack Ewing was pleased with the traffic coming in and out of the market.
"It was a very good showing," Ewing said. "That is even taking into account that a lot of other activities was going on at the same time. Seven vendors were there on Saturday, but two helped with cooking hotdogs and refreshments."
Some of the growers who attended this year's grand opening were Wax Produce, VanMeters Family Farm, Caneyville Gardens, Three Springs Farm, Byrds Berry Farm, Mike Block and Bill Johnson.
Items for sale at the Farmers Market include, but not limited to: eggs, berries, pastries, squash, onions, tomatoes, herbs and flowers.
"The community was very receptive to the event," Ewing explained. "They were very supportive of what these producers are trying to accomplish. Several of the cars that stopped in even had out of state plates."
Ewing invited those who were unable to attend the grand opening to come and see for themselves how valuable the Farmers Market is to Grayson County.
"The Farmers Market is an important source of locally-grown vegetables, fruit and berries," Ewing said, "grown under close supervision for the safety and high quality of each product that is sold."
