An area teen sustained non-life threatening injuries after a railroad train hit his vehicle on Wednesday, April 21, evening around 5 p.m.

According to a report from the Leitchfield Police Department, Clayton Cannon, 17, of Tin Oaks Drive, was attempting to cross the railroad intersection near Dewitt Park when a two-car train collided with his vehicle.

Cannon told police he remembers approaching the crossing, hearing the horn and the next thing he knew he was against the tree.

The 1997 Honda Accord Cannon was driving was knocked from the tracks and into a ditch.

The driver of the train, Jerry McGhee, of Paducah stated he was traveling down the railroad tracks and the Honda came up to the tracks very quickly and the train made contact as the vehicle crossed.

Tom Garrett, spokesman for the P&L Railroad, said the railroad investigates any incident like this and although their investigation is not complete, they are confident the crew acted properly.

“The flashing lights at that intersection were working properly and at this time we don’t see anything or any circumstances that our driver could have done to avoid this accident,” said Garrett. “Fortunately this type of thing happens infrequently but the railroad always investigates to make sure there is not something we need to correct.”

Grayson County Emergency Medical Services transported Cannon to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center.
