According to volunteer Bettye Lane, during a robbery sometime early Wednesday morning, someone broke into the shelter and barricaded a dog in the main office of the building, where it then attacked and killed two cats.
The Humane Society posted the news about the breaking and entering and the deaths of the two cats to their Facebook page sometime Wednesday and by Friday, the news and horror had spread to other shelters across the United States.
Posters were blogging on both the Humane Society’s pages and other pages that the act was simply a tragedy and that they hoped the responsible individuals were brought to justice as quickly as possible.
Lane explained that a city worker discovered the bloody mess in the early morning hours on February 24.
“Blood was everywhere,” Lane said. “It was just rubble in here. Two cages were down on the floor. Two dead cats were found with two chairs placed in front of the door. They put the dog in here where she could not get out, to attack the cats and kill them, which she did.”
Lane added that four or five dogs, also living at the shelter, were let out of their cages. The animals were found to be running around outside when the city worker arrived.
An undetermined amount of petty cash was stolen from the main office.
Leitchfield Police Detective Gary Troutman said the department has no leads at this time. Evidence has been collected, and officers are looking into the investigation further.
Troutman urged for anyone with information concerning this case, needs to contact the LPD office by phone at 270-259-3850. All leads will be kept confidential.
Lane felt the perpetrator had to be someone who was familiar with the shelter.
“It is pretty sad when there are local people,” Lane pleaded, “who donate to us, so we can find homes for these animals. Then someone comes in and steals money that was donated and kills animals. You just wonder why am I really doing this.”
The shelter is located at 213 William Thomason Byway.

I sure hope this person or persons is caught. And I believe the law does offer a stiff enough penalty at this time for I believe the person or persons deserves.
One article I read (stated: the dog was known to have agression towards cats) if this is true I would look at someone whom knew this dog did have aggressions towards cats/ out of all the dogs there at the time ( why that dog?)
I do believe this person will be punished for this act sooner or later.
