While plans for the new Clarkson community center are progressing along nicely, officials discussed Monday night about finalizing the layout and looking at possible locations for the facility.

Mayor Bonnie Henderson explained the next step was to find out how much the 100 x 60 building will cost, have an engineer draw up the blueprints and submit the final design to Lincoln Trail to find out what grant funding is available.

Some of the potential locations for the new building are the home beside Bank of Clarkson’s parking lot on East Main Street, beside the Clarkson Post Office on Millerstown Road, the old Dixie House restaurant building or on the land close to where the Clarkson Community Park is located.

The new building will potentially be the new home for Clarkson City Hall, as well as the Clarkson Police Department. The existing location may be sold or rented out as business office space.

Henderson assured nothing was permanent as of yet, and officials were looking at all the options first before finalizing anything.

A final cost for the construction project and grant funding possibilities will be discussed during the March meeting of the commission.

In other business:

• Two Clarkson signs are going to be purchased from Peerce Signs in Leitchfield for $1,000 each.

The two-sided project will say, “Welcome to Clarkson” on the front and “Bee Back soon” on the back. Henderson stressed the importance of having Kentucky’s Official State Honey Festival bee and Clarkson Redhawk emblems also on the front of the sign for motorists to see, because those were two items the city was most known for.

• A resolution was approved through Lincoln Trail Hazard Mitigation, allowing for needs-based assessments to be done on natural disasters that have occurred in the area.

Clarkson City Clerk and Treasurer Alicia Hayes explained that Lincoln Trail files for the grants on behalf of the whole county.

Meetings are held periodically in Leitchfield with other local-government entities about areas that require improvements to be done.

• Henderson and commissioners signed a proclamation on February 8 declaring March 2 as ‘Read Across America’ day in Clarkson.

The main goal of the program is to encourage kids, preschool age and up, to participate in various reading activities.
