The shelves were bare with no sleds in sight throughout Grayson County on Friday, because kids were ready for sledding fun in the estimated six to eight inches of snow the county received over the weekend.

This is the second snow accumulation to fall on the area since the beginning of the year. According to National Weather Service Meteorologist Mike Crow, Bowling Green weather estimates show 8.2 inches of snowfall for the area since January 1 of this year. That is three inches above the normal-precipitation rate for the month.

“Grayson County snow totals for the last storm was 5-7 inches,” Crow noted. “The snowstorm hit Friday evening through Saturday.”

The snow accumulation was a surprise for local retailers. As soon as new stations predicted the bad weather, consumers could be seen rushing the aisles looking for sledding equipment.

Walmart Assistant Manager Rodney Butler said people bought anything they could sit on to have fun riding around in the snow.

“They bought swim tubes to ride on,” Butler explained, “a couple of people even talked about buying garbage can lids. We usually have a lot of sleds left over after the season. But this time we sold out the first weekend.”

Crow foreshadowed another snowy weekend may be afoot. A smaller amount of rain-snow mix is forecasted to hit the county on Saturday.

“It is a low percentage chance,” Crow advised. “No specific amounts have been forecasted at this time. We are watching the front to see how it develops. The short-term outlook for February shows middle to below-normal temperatures, and below-normal precipitation.”
