It was a case of men against boys Thursday evening at Cougar Gym as the eighth-grade Butler County Bears put another whipping on the Cougars, 59-30.

The Bears, who improved to a stellar 27-1 for the season and will be the number-one seed for this weekend’s GRVC Tournament, led from start to finish and had little trouble with the Cougars (20-8) for the second time this season. The Bears won the first game, in Morgantown, 48-24.

Center Trever Jenkins, who is supposed to be a high school player (either a freshman or sophomore) scored 10 of his game-high 25 points in the first period to help the Bears grab a 19-8 lead.

Two free throws by Bret Johnston, who led the Cougars on the night with 14 points, brought Grayson County to within nine points of the lead, 22-13 with 2:20 left in the second quarter. They would never be closer.

Butler County scored the last four points of the first half to lead 26-13, then outscored the Cougars 16-7 in the third period to lead by 22 points, 42-20 heading into the final period of play.

Jackson Waster scored 13 points for the Bears to join Jenkins in double figures.

In addition to his 14 points, Johnston added four rebounds and three assists. Jameson Van Meter hit a pair of threes for the Cougars and finished with 10 points. Brett Majors, Colton Hayes and Talon Gary all scored two points to complete the Cougar scoring.

The eighth-graders are scheduled to face McLean County in Saturday’s first round of the GRVC Tournament, which is being held at Butler County Middle School. That game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
