A new group of members are breathing fresh air into an old organization giving Rough River State Park some new ideas and help.

What is known as Friends of Rough River Lake Inc. has a new president, Gillie Hust and the first order of business was to come up with a logo to represent the group.

“We hosted a contest and sent out messages to a number of organizations looking for ideas for a logo for our group,” said Hust. “We had several great entries but the one we chose was from a local art student.”

The winning entry came from Grayson County High School Senior Kalib Lindsey. The logo is a simple picture with a few trees and a sun in a back drop of the lake water.

Lindsey won two season passes to Western Kentucky University basketball games, a free one-day rental of a pontoon boat from Rough River Resort, a free night of camping and a check for $25 as prizes for presenting the winning logo.

In addition to developing a new logo Hust and the other members of Friends have completed the required paperwork to make the organization tax exempt and are working on a webpage.

There are currently several events planned for at Rough River State Park but the group is looking at other ways to include the community into events at the Park.

The group currently has 12 members but Hust feels the membership will grow as the word gets out that they have reorganized.

“I am excited about this group because of the interest I have gotten,” said Hust. “But we are working with a great bunch of people and looking for anyone who has any interest in the lake at all to join us.”

The annual Trash Bash, where volunteers gather to cleanup the lake by collecting the garbage left behind by others is always a major event held at the lake.

This year there were over 100 people who came out to help clean up the lake and they collected such items as an old refrigerator, freezer and jet ski that were buried in the mud.

“There are a lot of fun, family orientated events that are being planned for next year,” said Hust. “I am thrilled to be a part of making our lake a fun, safe place for the whole family to enjoy.”
