There may be over $225,000 in grant funding coming to Grayson County for green initiative projects.

The county passed two resolutions on December 18 that would allow Bel Cheese to turn whey into energy and the Grayson County Board of Education to install new lighting at the soccer field.

Bel Brands Plant, located on Highway 54, may receive $125,000 for a new machine that transforms whey into energy.

Bel Brands Plant Manager Francine Moudry said both the county and city were working diligently to help with finding better ways to get rid of whey.

According to Logsdon, the utilities commission is also applying for grant funding to help out with the Moudry’s vision of going green.

Previously the company had been contracting someone to dispense of the byproduct. The whey would be dispersed onto farmlands out in the county.

During the special-called meeting Grayson County Judge Executive Gary Logsdon explained the deadline was quickly approaching for the grant submittals.

“We have found a grant,” Logsdon said, “out there that will help the industry help subsidize an expense they have.”

The other grant would help pay for $100,000 in new energy-efficient lighting for the high school soccer field, located off of Lawler Lane in Leitchfield.

Grant Writer Nona Logsdon said Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grants would require no contribution the county behalf for the funding.

“The money would help pay for sports lighting at the soccer field,” Nona explained. “It is a very competitive grant and there is no match required for it.”

In other business:

• The courthouse will receive some necessary improvements to the brick. County officials approved the motion to pay $3,800 for the work.

Roger Williams has been contracted out to repair cracked areas in the brick walls of the courthouse.

Logsdon said Williams would begin working on the repairs very soon.
