Ten more children in Grayson County have the promise of a better Christmas, thanks to the Leitchfield Fire Department.

LFD Chief Carl Smith said he felt lucky to have been able to collect $1,500 to shop for 10 kids this year.

Five of the children met on Saturday morning at the Ronald Hudson Firehouse, anxiously awaiting their chance to ride on a fire truck to Walmart. The main focus of the six firemen who volunteered was to find pants, shirts, shoes, coats and some toys for each of the five participants.

Half of the students that were chosen attended Oran P. Lawler Elementary School and other came from H.W. Wilkey Elementary School.

“I knew the kids from Lawler because I am employed there,” Smith explained. “I knew they could really use some help this Christmas.”

Leitchfield resident Wilena Skees raised half of the money for the cause and the department matched the funds collected.

“I have helped out with the fire department for several years,” Skees said. “They are fantastic people. They are my heroes, and I love them everyone.”
