Burning down a house, plugging a hole in the lake and creating a vision for the city of Leitchfield were the discussions that dominated the September 21 city council meeting.

After hearing the first reading of the rezoning request of 627 White Oak Street, Council member and city firefighter Jerry Schlosser informed the council the fire department was planning to use the building for training.

The fire department will conduct training on October 10 when fire officials set fire to the building.

Property owners Norbert Hayes and Mark Cook have request the zone change from R-2 to R-5 with the intention of building a complex with six apartments, reported Leitchfield Planning and Zoning Director Keith Jones.

Mayor William H. Thomason said the needed repairs to the city park were going to cost more than originally expected.

“The plastic that is needed to line the lake is high in cost,” said Thomason. “The sides of the lake have collapsed more this summer and the mud is deep.”

Thomason said the hourly rate to repair the lake could get high and it could cost as much as $60,000 to repair the lake.

No decision was made as to how to make the necessary repairs.

The council also discussed a work session slated for next week where city leaders will set goals and a vision for the city. The meeting is set for next Monday at 6 p.m.

During the September 7 meeting City Councilman Steven Elder suggested the city set some short term and long-term goals and try to come up with a vision for the city. It was agreed the council would meet for a work session to accomplish this.
