A group of concerned citizens met Wednesday to discuss ways to honor the bicentennial of Grayson County, which will celebrate its 200th birthday on January 25, 2010.
Many suggestions and ideas were made during the one-hour session and it was decided that the first thing needed was a logo. The group decided to hold a contest that will allow the community to become involved from the start.
The logo contest is open to all ages, amateurs and professionals. Entries are due by Aug. 25 at 4 p.m. and should be turned at the Centre on Main. Entries must be made on 8.5x11 paper or poster board.
Name, age, and contact information must be included on the back of each entry.
The logo entries will be displayed in one of the merchant buildings during the 2009 Grayson County Fair in September. Prizes and further rules may be announced at a later date.
Several of the entries may be used create a calendar celebrating the Grayson County Bicentennial.
After it was decided to hold the logo contest a steering committee was appointed at the initial meeting and the group will meet on August 13 to discuss further plans for the year-long celebration.
Some of the ideas generated during the meeting were as follows:
• to declare a week for celebrating later in the year, when the weather and attendance is likely to be better, rather than in January.
• to have the Historical Society open the Jack Thomas House and Buchannan Log Cabin for two days for free tours in January.
• to have the bicentennial logo and slogan tied into all the festivals, such as the Honey Fest, Freedom Fest and Caneyville Fair, during the 2010 year.
• advertise the bicentential on street banners in Leitchfield and on welcome signs at the entrance of all cities.
• to have school classes make floats for the 2010 Labor Day parade.
• to have the Chamber/Tourism develop a calendar of historic pictures and logo entries for the year.
• to make a bicentennial quilt, get a bicentennial marker and create a bicentennial time capsule were more ideas presented to the group.
• to develop a play to present the history of county in small presentations from January through April,
• store-fronts may also be decorated with historic items that may represent different historic eras.
• use billboards, banners and brochures advertising the 200 year celebration around the county.
• the Historical Society may present “Patchwork a History of Grayson County” to schools and public. “Patchwork” is a 35 min. video about the county, also available for sale.
The next general meeting open to the public will be at noon, August. 27 at Centre on Main.
