With the festival season rapidly approaching, local law enforcement will be tasked with strictly enforcing safe travel for visitors to Grayson County.

Grayson County Chief Deputy Sheriff Tony Willen talked about the department’s plans to ensure that people will be more cautious while driving.

For Fourth of July alone, nine road deputies with the sheriff’s department, and officers with Leitchfield Police will be setting up roadblocks.

“Traffic has increased during this time,” he explained. “That is why we will be conducting roadblocks and sobriety checks. We will also be checking to see if people are wearing their seatbelts. Any violations will be enforced. “

He added, that in general, all calls increase over the summer.

“With the two lakes,” Willen explained, “The population here greatly increases during the summer months. Especially on holidays, we are extremely busy, so it is very important that we dedicate our time to enforce traffic laws.”

Another thing that officers will be enforcing is car seat safety.

Effective July 1, Governor Steve Beshear announced that a courtesy warning would no longer be provided for motorists who do not have children in booster seats. Violators will be issued a $30 fine, if they do not take the option of purchasing a booster seat instead.

Beshear signed the proclamation in April 2008, which was aimed at improving the safety of child passengers in Kentucky.
