A plan to revive the July fireworks festival known as the Ice Cream Festival was presented to the Leitchfield City Council during the Monday night meeting.

After the city council received information that local radio station K105 may not be hosting the long-running annual ice cream festival ways to continue the celebration were sought.

Local business owner Ken Roberts put together a presentation for the council that would move the festival from the middle school and put it in the heart of Leitchfield around the square.

“I saw a threat that a community event may cease to exist and have looked at ways to continue to bring this event to the citizens of Grayson County,” said Roberts. “I was approached by the council and asked for ideas that would help the festival not only survive but move forward.”

Roberts proposed changing it to the square and opening the event up to vendors as well as turning it into a three-day event that included local churches on Sunday morning.

“I have spent the last several days discussing the possibility of this with several local vendors and I have found a substantial interest to turn this into an event by the community for the community,” said Roberts. “By turning it into a three day festival it opens the possibility of adding a number of events to the celebration.”

The festival would begin on Friday evening with carnival rides, a classic car cruise and vendor booths set up in the heart of Leitchfield like it began years ago.

Saturday’s events may include a 5K Fun Run, pancake breakfast, classic car show, beauty pageant and a fireworks display with soundtrack at dusk.

The proposal included a Sunday, tent service held by local churches, gospel bands and a Sundae Social with the closing events ending with a moment of prayer for the country.

No decision was made during the council meeting but a committee was formed to look into the possibility of making the changes to the festival, giving the community one more way to share time with family members and celebrate summer.
