Two fatal accidents dampened the holiday spirits for Grayson County residents this Memorial Day weekend.

A single vehicle accident Friday, May 22, left one Caneyville resident dead.

According to a report issued by the Grayson County Sheriff’s office, James Dodrill, 66, was traveling east on Locust Hill Road when the F150 Ford truck left the right shoulder ad continued down the ditch several feet before striking a tree, Friday afternoon around 4:30 p.m..

Deputy Sheriff Robert Jackson reported the lack of skid marks along with the fact that there were no apparent signs that Dodrill attempted to re-enter the road and an extensive medical history it is suspected the deceased may have suffered congestive heart failure prior to impact.

The second fatal accident happened Saturday afternoon on Brandenburg Road just south of Holly Church involved a truck and a motorcycle.

Upon arriving at the scene Deputy Sheriff Bryan Hammons was informed the driver of the motorcycle, Gregory Masterson, 54. of Hudson was deceased.

The driver of the truck, Murrell Carter, 72, also of Hudson, was going north on Highway 259 when he noticed vehicular traffic stopped in the roadway.

Carter was afraid he would not be able to avoid hitting a vehicle in the rear and he veered to the left, crossing the middle line, reported Hammons.

Carter reported he was going to go off the left side of the road to avoid impact with the other vehicles and did not see Masterson on the motorcycle until he crossed the center-line.

Masterson was unable to avoid the truck driven by Carter and hit the vehicle on the passenger side after it crossed into his lane of travel. Masterson was not wearing a helmet.

Cater was treated at Twin Lakes Medical Center for minor injuries and blood alcohol testing was performed.

Hammons went on to add, it is standard procedure to do blood alcohol testing of a driver in a fatal accident and it is not an indication that alcohol was a factor in the accident.

Masterson was pronounced dead at the scene by Grayson County Deputy Coroner Larry Holeman.
