At 10 a.m. on Saturday May 23, bells will toll in honor of fallen Veterans of Grayson County to begin the annual Memorial Day parade.

This is a parade unlike other parades. There will be no floats or bands for this solemn event.

Retired Judge Harold Goff started this parade nine years ago to honor the Grayson County veterans that have given their life in times of war.

Each of the slain Veterans will have a sign with his/her name that will be carried by a family member or volunteer.

A banner in the parade identifying the different wars are being carried by the local Boys Scouts of America Troops assisted by the local girls scout troops.

The names of the veterans date back to the Revolutionary War through Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The ceremonies will feature special guest speaker, Mark D. Needham, Executive Director of the Kentucky Commission on Military Affairs and Special Assistant to Governor Steve Beshear focusing on coordinating federal and state efforts to support BRAC growth.

Needham has had numerous command and staff assignment throughout his military career.

Line-up starts at 9 a.m. at the Leitchfield Fire House Station Number II. Anyone who would like to carry a sign is encouraged to attend the event.

"Every year so many wonderful people come out to help carry those signs just out of respect for what these men and women have done for us and our country," said Caryn Lewis, Executive director of the Chamber of Commerce.

"Our goal this year is to have one sign per person and we encourage and welcome any and all volunteers to come out and join us in honoring the ultimate sacrifice made by our peers and those before us," added Lewis.

After the ceremony, barbeque, hamburgers and hotdogs for all will be served behind the County Government Building (old Arnett’s building), with music provided.

Everyone is invited to participate to honor the veterans of the county.
