According to a report released by Kentucky State Trooper Norman Chaffins, 17-year-old Trevor Edwards, Falls of Rough, was traveling north on Watershed Road when he lost control of the 1998 Ford Ranger he was driving.
“He was going too fast as he came around the corner and when he hit his brakes the truck skidded head-on into the Nissan Altima Stewart was a passenger in,” said Chaffins. “The teen admitted he had been drinking alcohol and agreed to a blood test.”
Chaffins went on to add there were four occupants in the Altima, the driver, Elmer C. Stewart, Jr., Casey and two children in the back seat. None of those in the Altima were properly fastened in the vehicle. The children were in booster seats but Chaffins felt they should have been in car seats. The driver and Casey both had shoulder straps on but the lap belts were not attached.
Stewart, along with both children and the passenger of the truck were flown by LifeNet from Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center to University of Louisville Hospital. Stewart suffered several broken bones and internal injuries, the four-year old child in the back seat suffered a broken pelvis and the three-year-old fractured a femur bone. Neither of the children suffered life threatening injuries reported to Chaffins.
The passenger of the Altima, 55-year-old Casey (Caneyville) died enroute to Twin Lakes and was pronounced by Grayson County Coroner Joe Brad Hudson.
The passenger of the truck driven by Edwards, Joshua Long, 20, suffered broken bones and his injuries were non-life threatening. He was flown from an area hospital to a Louisville hospital later Tuesday evening. Long had not been wearing a seat belt.
Edwards suffered minor injuries.
The blood alcohol test results should be available within two to three weeks and if the teen was drinking while under the influence then he could be charged with criminal murder charges for Casey’s death and assault charges for the victims who were injured, said Chaffins.
“There may also be charges pending on the adults who provided the minor with alcohol,” said Chaffins.
The Grayson County Sheriff’s Department assisted with the investigation.
