I did not know middle school student, Keith Walker, but I felt such sorrow in his unexpected death.
Please understand I do not wish to minimizehis family’s loss in anyway; they will continue to be in my prayers.
What I know about Keith’s death, I only know from what I have read in the newspapers.
After reading the latest regarding the lawsuit against coach Bill Lee and Georg Meredith, I realized that pain and suffering comes from natural causes, accidents and an intentional act, which is the cruelest of them all.
I have known these coaches and their families for many, many years. This is what I know to be true about them. They are the examples of people you want involved with your children. They are so trustworthy that they will do anything to keep a child from harm. They are the strong, yet suffer along with the children. They are the unselfish that gave unbelieveable hours and days to coach and teach, and we all know money isn’t the reason. They are the thoughtful because they plan and seek opportunities and experiences for your children. They are the leaders that your children want to emulate when they grow up.
They are the parents that know the depth of a love for a child.
They are the men who have also felt loss deeply.
They are the type of coaches I would want around when my child got hurt, and pray there was an emergency room doctor in the house, with an ambulance ready outside the doors. Unfortunately, when does that ever happen?
Times are sadly changing for coaches who are expected to have the medical experience of physicians and in some cases, mental-health professionals, when our kids are in need.
It is a much less than perfect world, but by showing support and standing up for what is right, it could be a nicer world. It doesn’t mean we don’t understand, respect or even hurt for other who are grieving.
Coaches Lee and Meredith, your pain and suffering from that very sad day in the gym has probably caused you to question many things, but do not question why you were there. You were coaching, doing what you were supposed to be doing.
Our community has been blessed by your commitment, efforts and intent.
You are both good men and are deserving of many, many thanks!
Respectfully submitted,
Denise Embry
