Leitchfield Tee-Ball will host an opening day ceremony and food drive to benefit the Grayson County Alliance Food Pantry on Saturday, April 27, according to District Commissioner of Baseball Jose Soto.

Soto said after hearing that 75% of children in the community are on either reduced or free lunch, he wanted to do something to help the needy, so he is working with the food pantry to host a food drive during the opening day of tee-ball.

Soto said the event will start at 10 a.m., and he will ask each of the 70 tee-ball players and all attendees to donate at least three canned food items.

Soto said all donations will go to the food pantry.

In addition to the three scheduled tee-ball games, Soto said there will also be a cake walk, a special guest appearance by the Hot Rods mascot, performances by the Grayson County Middle School choir and the American Legion Post 81 Color Guard, and a bounce house.

Soto detailed the event to the Leitchfield City Council and asked them for financial support of $500 during the regularly scheduled Monday, March 18 meeting.

During the meeting, Soto also requested that Mayor William Thomason say a few words during the food drive as well.

Councilman Jerry Schlosser made a motion to donate $500 to aid in funding for the opening day celebration and food drive, and the Council voted to pass the motion.

Soto said any and all donations are welcome, and those wishing to make a donation may contact him at 535-1819.
