Hosting their first track & field meet last Friday evening at their newly resurfaced Cougar Field track, the Cougars finished in first place, while the Lady Cougars took third.
According to head coach Matt Hayes, in the past there were certain teams that would not send their athletes to meets held at Grayson County because of the old asphalt surface, but that has changed now that the track has had a new, rubberized surface installed.
Friday, the Cougars hosted perhaps their largest gathering of teams ever as seven men’s teams and eight women’s teams competed. Those on hand included Meade County, Central Hardin, Elizabethtown, Butler County, Muhlenberg County, Larue County and the Daviess County women’s team.
The Cougars had five individual competitors win six different events and they also won the 4x200-meter relay. They compiled 194 1/2 points to finish first. Meade County was second with 129 points, while Elizabethtown was third with 110.
The Lady Cougars had two individual winners on the evening and finished in third with 99 1/2 points. Central Hardin won the team title with 149 points, while Elizabethtown was second with 105.
Senior Max Cabe, a signee with Campbellsville University, won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of :44.37, and was third in the 110-meter hurdles in :16.79.
Taylor Wright won the pole vault with a leap of 9-feet even. Wright also earned points with a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter dash in :12.03.
Senior Cody Woosley had first-place finishes in two events. He took the open 400-meters with a time of :56.37, then won the 200-meters in :24.60.
Senior Andrew Vincent was first in the discus with a toss of 126-feet even, and also earned points with a third-place finish in the shot put, throwing 44-feet, 7-inches.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night was the performance of junior Tyler Hall, who is participating in track for the first time. Hayes said the first time Hall threw the shot he went 38 feet. He previously had a personal best of 43 feet, but on this night threw it 48-feet, 3 1/2-inches to win the event. Hall also earned points with a 6th-place finish in the discus with a throw of 89-feet, 9-inches.
Winning performances for the Lady Cougars were turned in by sophomore Hannah Ashley in the discus, and sophomore Jessica Johnson in the high jump.
Ashley threw the disc 84-feet, 9-inches, then earned points in the shot put with an eighth-place finish as she threw 22-feet, 11-inches. Johnson, who has only been working out with the team for a week following the end of the basketball season, cleared 4-feet-4-inches in the high jump to win.
Others earning points for the Cougars included: Bret Crawford, fifth in the 110-meter hurdles in :18.88, third in the 300-meter hurdles in :45.96, second in the 800-meters in 2:08.00, and second in the 3200-meters in 10:33.00; Josh Harris, second in the 100-meters in :11.78, and fifth in the triple jump at 32-feet, 2-inches; Justin Gallagher, second in the 1600-meters in 5:09.00; Jacob Hart, eighth-in the 3200-meters in 12:51.00.
Dakota Baker finished fourth in the shot put at 39-feet, 5-inches; Alex Burden, eighth in the triple jump at 28-feet, 10-inches; Sheldon Jones, second in the high jump at 6-feet even, and second in the pole vault at 8-feet even; Trey Sanders, sixth in the long jump at 16-feet, 4 1/2-inches.
Those earning points for the Lady Cougars included: Kala Haycraft, fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in :20.19, fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in 1:12.30, and sixth in the long jump at 10-feet, 4-inches; Makayla Spalding, fifth in the 100-meter dash in :14.43, and third in the high jump at 4-feet, 2-inches; Bailey Martin, fourth in the 400-meters in 1:10.10, and second in the long jump at 12-feet, 7 1/2-inches;.
Aleisha Jaggers, third in the 300-meter hurdles in 1:07.20; Holly Hayes, third in the discus at 71-feet, 5-inches, and second in the shot put at 30-feet, 3-inches; Samantha Green, sixth in the discus at 68-feet, 1-inch.
