Clarkson Elementary School’s team came out on top at the annual Grayson County Quick Recall Challenge on Saturday morning.
The event, which was hosted at Grayson County Middle School, included teams from each of the local public elementary schools.
Clarkson academic coach Joyce Elmore said, “Most all of the matches were exceptionally close. It was very obvious that all of the teams have worked exceptionally hard.”
Elmore said that her group moved to the ‘losers bracket’ early in the match after a loss to Lawler Elementary School’s team, which came in second place, and had to come back from that loss to win.
“Our children were ecstatic that they were able to hold out,” she said.
Clarkson’s winning team was led by Elmore and Karen Meredith. Students participating were Addie Horn, Payton Abney, Mason Galloway, Stetson Higdon, Hannah Willis, Jessica Manion, Graci Franklin, Erin Ashley, Austin Stevenson, Kenzie Willoughby, Savanna Higdon, Grant Manion and Miles Hornbeck.
In addition to the excitement of taking home top honors, each year since 2005 the winning team has been awarded $500 from the Meredith Award for Academic Excellence. The children of Kermit and Opal Meredith - Debbie Downey; Steve Meredith and Charlotte Gower, a member of the Grayson County Board of Education - give this award to honor their family’s high regard for education. Downey, Meredith and Gower also have a personal connection with the academic teams, having each had children involved in the program.
