At GCHS we have several great clubs and organizations that many students are involved in.

One specific club that many students enjoy being involved with is Art club.

Members complete several school projects year round. One of the current projects that they are working on is a mural (painting on a wall, ceiling, or other large permanent surface) on the wall in the Special Education hallway.

“The mural we are working on in the Special Ed. hallway represents the different time periods of art, such as Romanticism, Surrealism, Impressionism, Modern, etc. Each time period has a famous painting to represent that period,” said club president Kayla Gibson. You can find selected members dedicating their time on the mural after school every Wednesday until completed.

The Art club tries to sponsor a big trip every year, but there are a few requirements to have in order to follow through with a trip.

For instance, with the company they travel with you have to have 50 people going on the trip at minimum.

This means that if enough people are not interested in going on the trip, they cannot go.

A common question that students have regarding these trips is, if you have to be a club member in order to be able to go.

You do NOT have to be a member to go on the trip. The art club does, however, take a huge part in deciding where to go for the trip.

This year they plan on going to New York City. Although the official dates have not been confirmed just yet, they are aiming for May 15 through 19.

On the trip they intend on seeing such sites as the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum, the Modern of Modern Art, Ground Zero, Chinatown and Little Italy, Ellis Island and the hit Broadway show, “The Phantom of the Opera.” When visiting these places, the students are able to sight-see and shop in groups. Around 50 people are expected to go, and there may still be open slots available.

In the future, the art club hopes to host a talent show at either the high school or middle school.

“It has not been approved yet but it's something a lot of people are interested in,” said Gibson.
