The Cougar basketball teams traveled up the road to Whitesville on Tuesday and came home with a pair of lopsided wins.
Talon Gary scored 22 points and led the team with seven rebounds as the varsity ran away with a 58-41 victory. The JV squad held the Raiders to just a single point in the first quarter on their way to a 49-28 win.
VARSITY GAME
The Cougars (7-8) opened the game by scoring the first 10 points, including two three-pointers from senior Rance Whobrey, who returned to action after missing several games with an illness.
A Gary 15-footer at the 2:12 mark pushed the lead to 11 points, 14-3 before Trinity’s Zach Boehmann hit two free throws at 1:21 to make it 14-5. Logan Ramsey then closed out the first period scoring with a three-pointer and the Cougars led by 12 points, 17-5 heading into the second period.
Grayson County steadily built its lead in the second quarter. A Gary jumper at the 3:09 mark made it a 14-point lead, 25-11. A three-pointer by Braxton Williams with 2:24 left made it a 15-point game, 28-13. Williams’ three was the start of a 9-0 Cougar run that saw them leading by 21 points, 34-13 with 29 seconds left in the half. They led by 20, 36-16 at the break.
Williams hit 1-of-2 free throws at the 3:35 mark of the third quarter to give the Cougars their largest lead of the night, 25 points at 45-20, but the Raiders cut four points off that advantage at the end of the period, 52-31.
Whitesville opened the final period with a 6-1 burst to cut their deficit to 16 points, 53-37 with 6:22 left to play, but they would get no closer.
Trinity put two players into double figures, led by Boehmann’s 15 points. Alex Lanham had 13 for the Raiders.
Williams joined Gary in double-figure scoring, finishing with 11 points and he added four rebounds and three steals. Whobrey and freshman Colton Williams both finished with six points. Whobrey added five rebounds, while Williams had four.
Logan Ramsey and Bret Johnston both finished with four points and Johnston led the team with three assists and four steals. Tanner Tyra had three points while Dustin Crain completed the Cougar scoring with two points.
JV GAME
This game was decided nearly before it got started. The Cougars scored the first 16 points of the game, including three-pointers from Dylan Woodcock and Lane Decker, and led 20-1 after the first period of play.
Another three-pointer by Zac Williams increased the Cougar lead to 20 points, 28-8 with 1:16 left, and the score stayed that way until the half.
When Grayson County opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run to make it 35-8, the game was pretty much all over except the shouting. The Cougars led by 24 points, 43-18 heading into the fourth quarter.
Grayson County had two players in double figures. Colton Williams scored 13 points and also led the team on the boards with seven rebounds. Decker finished with 10 points and added three assists.
Woodcock had seven points, while Lane Rackley had six. Rackley also pulled down six rebounds on the night. Tyra and Gage Akridge both finished with four points, Zac Williams had three, and Cole Akridge had two to complete the scoring.
