One Grayson County man has been arrested for the December 19 burglary of Caneyville Feed Mill and Otiis Bryant and Sons, Inc..
The businesses, which share office space on East Maple Street in Caneyville, were broken into on Wednesday when a thief pried the doors open, causing damage to the building.
A number of shop tools were taken, many of them expensive pieces such as a plasma cutter, as was a Ford F350 flatbed diesel truck, according to Grayson County Sheriff’s Department Detective Jeff Kelsey.
The Sheriff’s Department was alerted to the burglary and quickly received information that some tools which appeared to be similar to those stolen were littering a nearby roadway and had caused a one-vehicle accident at the intersection of Pine Knob Road and Falls of Rough Road, around three miles north of Caneyville.
Kelsey said that he received a call from Deputy Adam Cottrell, who worked the accident that caused notable damage to a 2007 Chevrolet belonging to Steven A. Litsey, of Caneyville, and had removed large wrenches and an auto jack from the roadway.
Caneyville Fire Department had to be called to the scene of the accident to assist in clearing the large amount of fluids that the wreck had left on the roadway.
Kelsey explained that this tip-off led them to find several other locations where more stolen items appeared to have fallen off of a truck.
The trail of clues led the detective to the quick recovery of the stolen vehicle at an abandoned property on Knob Road. Kelsey said that he was able to easily spot the stolen Ford from the roadway.
Available information indicated the involvement of Knob Road resident Daniel Conrad, Kelsey explained.
A warrant had already been issued for Conrad for the burglary of a garage belonging to Cecil Parks approximately three weeks earlier.
Conrad was apprehended on that warrant and questioned about the incidents. He confessed to both burglaries, Kelsey said.
Conrad was arrested and charged with three counts of burglary in the third degree, one count of theft by unlawful taking of a vehicle valued at more than $500, and one count of criminal mischief.
He is currently being lodged at the Grayson County Detention Center.
A representative from Otiis Bryant said Friday that all of the stolen items have been returned to their company, though some were damaged.
