COULD YOU BE A VOLUNTEER?

This is the time of year we think about helping others in whatever ways we can. You may not consider volunteering as a way of helping but it is a much needed service at the Grayson County Alliance, especially at the Food Pantry.

The pantry is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 1:30 to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. ( after the first Thursday) to serve those who qualify. Workers and volunteers are there many more hours to receive, separate, and stock the food. This service does not involve lifting, but does require some client interaction. Many man hours are needed to do this, and at this time the Pantry does not have enough volunteer help. They are also in need of food to distribute. If you could donate nonperishable foods or money, it will be put to good use. If you would have three to four hours per week or month to volunteer to help, it would make a tremendous difference.

The Furniture Project is also in need of volunteers and good, used furniture. Volunteers are needed to pick up furniture at people’s homes and bring it to the furniture warehouse. You would need to have your own truck/trailer to use. You can set your pick-up hours to coordinate with your work schedule. Also, the warehouse is nearly empty of all types of furniture. We need beds, tables and chairs, dressers, sofas, and working appliances. There is a real need for children’s dressers. If you have some good, gently used furniture or appliances you could donate, please call the Grayson county Alliance office at 259-4000.

The definition of a volunteer is “a person who voluntarily offers himself or herself for a service or undertaking without pay.” At this time the Food Pantry and Furniture Project could use you to help them help others.

Becoming a volunteer would be a good New Year’s resolution. Give it some thought and if you can help out, please call 259-4000 and get signed up now!

Thanks, from the Grayson County Alliance.
