The middle school girls basketball teams picked up two more wins last Monday evening as the Lady Cougars swept visiting Hancock County.
Behind Grace Gorby’s double-double, the seventh-grade girls beat the Hornets 36-18 in the first game to move to 15-2 for the season.
In the late game, both Grace White and Allie Horton scored in double figures as the Lady Cougars won 40-30 to improve to 13-2 on Eighth-Grade Night.
EIGHTH-GRADE GAME
The final score did not really indicate how the Lady Cougars dominated this game from start to finish. Grayson County never trailed in the game and led by 19 points at the half before Hancock made a comeback in the second half.
White led all scorers in the game with 18 points and she also led the team on the boards with nine rebounds. Horton finished with 11 points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals.
Grayson County scored the first six points of the game. Hancock’s Ameria Thomas hit a lay-up with 4:42 remaining in the first quarter to stop the Grayson County run, but the Lady Cougars closed out the period with 10 unanswered points and led 16-2 heading into the second quarter.
Thomas opened the scoring in the second period to make it 16-4, but Grayson County responded with nine unanswered points to lead by 21 points, 25-4 with 2:40 remaining in the first half.
Hancock’s Kassie Keown hit a lay-in with 28 seconds left to make it a 19-point game, 25-6 at the half.
The Lady Cougars had 10 straight empty trips opening the third quarter, allowing Hancock to score the first nine points and cut the lead to 10 points, 25-15 with 2:51 left to play. The Lady Cougars closed out the period by outscoring the visitors 5-3 and led by 12 points, 30-18 heading into the final period of play.
A 15-footer by Horton and two White free throws opening the fourth quarter gave the Lady Cougars a 16-point advantage, 34-18, then a three-pointer by Shannon Smith with 4:29 left to play made it a 17-point lead, 37-20.
Hancock County then scored eight straight to get the lead into single digits, nine points at 37-28 with 2:14 left to play. White scored on a lay-up, was fouled and hit the free throw with 1:39 left to give the Lady Cougars a 12-point advantage, 40-28, before Hancock’s Emma Robinson ended the scoring with a runner with 37 seconds left.
Keown led the visitors with 11 points. Smith and Shelbi Pendergest both scored three points for the Lady Cougars, while Kennedi Cave, Leslie Swafford and Taylor Glenn scored two apiece to complete the scoring. Smith also led the team in steals with five.
SEVENTH-GRADE GAME
The seventh-grade girls opened the game by scoring the first eight points and never trailed in their blowout win.
Hannah Salsman hit a pair of three pointers in the first quarter as the Lady Cougars raced out to a 12-2 lead.
A three-pointer by Gorby at the 4:00 minute mark of the second quarter gave the Lady Cougars a 13-point advantage, 17-4, but Hancock County came roaring back, scoring nine straight to pull to within four points of the lead, 17-13 with 1:17 left in the half.
But Salsman hit 1-of-2 at the line and Embry Thorpe hit a 10-footer with 12 second left to give the Lady Cougars a seven-point lead, 20-13 heading into the half-time break.
It was all Grayson County in the third quarter as the Lady Cougars held Hancock to just a single point and expanded their lead to 16 points, 30-14 as the fourth quarter began.
Gorby hit a pair of threes in the fourth quarter as Grayson County continued pulling away to win by 18 points.
Gorby had a great night for the Lady Cougars, recording a double-double with 13 points, including three threes, and 10 rebounds. Salsman was right behind with nine points and added three rebounds.
Mackenzie Edwards scored six points, pulled down seven rebounds and led the team with eight steals. Four players, Thorpe, Brandi Minton, Shana Bradley and Breanna Frank scored two points apiece to complete the scoring.
