Grayson County’s USDA agencies will be teaming up with area churches in coming weeks to gather food for the hungry.

The Farm Service Agency, the Natural Resources Conservation Service and Rural Development will resume an exclusive partnership with county churches for the 16th annual “Harvest of the Heart” food drive.

“By focusing on our county churches and trying to create a unified time and place for this shared concern, we are hopeful that together we can meet or exceed our goals and expectations for donations,” said the FSA’s Sandra Childress.

Volunteers will place collection bins in participating churches the first week in November, with the collection drive for canned and boxed non-perishable foods set for Nov. 11-18.

All items collected will go to the Grayson County Alliance Food Pantry, which currently is helping more than 900 families per month. “Donations, wherever they come from, are important for (the pantry) to provide for our county,” Childress said.

Last year, the drive collected approximately 2,743 pounds of food items for the food pantry.

“Each year the productivity of the American farmer increases. Yet, each year, people in our country (and our county) go without food,” she said. “Even with the difficult economic times that are upon us all, we are truly blessed and it is hoped that many will welcome the opportunity to give a little back to help those in need. By consolidating our efforts, we have the potential to administer a more effective and efficient food drive. We have a wonderful opportunity to take care of our own here in Grayson County.”

Churches interested in participating in the food drive can contact the FSA at 259-3716 by Nov. 2 for more details.
