The city utilities commission is asking for stimulus dollars through the Kentucky At Work initiative to fund needed projects.

According to Governor Steve Beshear's office, $3 billion in stimulus funding has been provided from the federal government, which will be invested in Kentucky over the next 28 months. A portion of that funding will go for infrastructure improvements.

On March 5 commission members discussed the submittal of paperwork to the state for the raw water intake and wastewater treatment plant projects.

The intake project will help improve water quality for utilities' customers, by moving the intake to a higher elevation.

It is estimated to cost the utilities department about $4 million.

Back in December 2008 utilities members authorized Larry Cann, of Cantech Engineering, to find a better location on Rough River Lake for the intake.

The other project was a rehabilitation of the equipment at the wastewater treatment plant in Leitchfield.

City Clerk and Treasurer Erin Embry said the project was still in the early stages of development.

In other business:

• Utilities members are in the midst of negotiating terms for moving a gas line to a new facility for Scotty's Contracting and Stone Company on Quarry Road.

Owner Wallace Anderson said the new green asphalt plant will be complete sometime in late April. He explained recycled materials will be used.

A letter was sent to the company by utilities attorney David Vickery on the specific terms of the utilities agreement.

• The April 2 utilities meeting will be cancelled, because some of the commission members will be out of town.
