A Leitchfield man was arrested following a Spurrier Road automobile accident on Saturday night, according to a report filed with the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputy Buck Meredith was notified at approximately 8:21 p.m. that a passerby had seen a wreck on Highway 720 just past the Highway 1168 intersection. The caller said that they had stopped to see if they could help, but were told by the driver to leave and not call the police.
When Meredith arrived at the scene, the vehicle had been moved to a gravel driveway near the site of the collision.
It appeared that the 1999 Chevrolet conventional cab pick-up had driven off of the right shoulder of the roadway and overcorrected before striking an earth embankment.
It appeared that the truck had overturned after the collision.
Several beer cans were in a ditch near the vehicle and the inside of the truck had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage, according to Meredith.
The driver, who was not at the scene, had been taken by unknown means to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center and was treated in the emergency room for injuries sustained in the accident.
The hospital notified Meredith, who then interviewed the driver, 20-year-old Devin Powell, of Dave Coffee Road, in Leitchfield.
Powell told Meredith that he had not been under the influence of alcohol, but had fallen asleep at the wheel. Powell said he overcorrected the vehicle before losing control and overturning.
Powell was issued a citation for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs. It was noted on the citation that Powell had a strong smell of alcoholic beverage on his person at the time.
Powell suffered multiple possible injuries in the collision and his vehicle was very severely damaged.
The truck was removed from the scene by Stevenson’s Wrecker Service.
