A Greenville, Ind., man faces criminal charges after allegedly exposing himself to shoppers at the Leitchfield Wal-Mart store.

Roger D. Gibson, 48, has been charged with indecent exposure, first degree, a misdemeanor. He was taken to the Grayson County Detention Center, where he was later released after posting bond. The date of his next scheduled court appearance was not available Tuesday morning.

According to Leitchfield Police Detective Kevin Smith, a woman approached an off-duty police officer around 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, and said a man had been exposing himself inside the store.

The officer — Police Chief Bart Glenn — detained the man until other officers arrived on the scene.

Smith said the woman did what anyone should do if confronted by an exhibitionist — get to safety, then notify law enforcement.

“Never approach the person, and never confront them,” he said. “You don’t know if the person is armed, or what the person is capable of.”

He said once you reach safety, try to keep an eye on the exhibitionist if possible so you can help inform police officers of his or her whereabouts.
