A goal by seventh-grader Kayden Sutherland with just under four minutes left to play gave the JV Lady Cougar soccer team a hard-fought 1-0 victory over visiting Breckinridge County last Tuesday evening at Cougar Field.
It was a frustrating game for Grayson County, especially in the first half when they controlled the action in the Breckinridge County end of the field for nearly all of the first 30 minutes.
The Lady Cougars had several opportunities to score, but could not get anything to click. In the fourth minute of play, sophomore Ashton Filburn streaked in on the right side with a clear shot on goal keeper Lindsey Roberts, but her shot was turned away.
Sutherland had several opportunities, but was turned aside each time. Perhaps her best chance came in the 12th minute when she came in all alone on the left side, but with Roberts at her mercy, Sutherland shanked her shot wide left.
Sutherland had another good chance in the final minute of the first half when she found herself behind the defense in front of the goal, but she was whistled for being offside, and the half ended with neither team being able to score.
The Lady Cougars seemed to have scored five minutes into the second half when Sutherland fed Filburn in front of the Lady Tiger goal. Filburn put the ball into the net, but as the Lady Cougars were celebrating, the official on the sideline flagged Filburn for being offside, negating the goal.
Eighth-grader Bailey Decker had a good chance in the 43rd minute, taking the ball in on the right side past the Breck defenders, but her shot on goal went wide.
In the 52nd minute, the Lady Cougars missed two point-blank opportunities. Sutherland won a ball right in front of the Lady Tiger goal, but her hard shot clanged off the upright. The ball rebounded right to sophomore Hannah Ashley, but her shot was stopped by Roberts.
Finally, in the 56th minute of play, the Lady Cougars got on the scoreboard. Sutherland brought a ball in from mid-field, down the left side. Pulling up short she switched the ball from her left foot, inside to her right as the defender sailed by. She then sent a low, whistling shot that travelled past a diving Roberts and settled into the far right corner of the net to make it 1-0.
Sutherland just missed making it 2-0 with a minute to play when a shot from about 20 yards out again hit the upright and bounded away. The ball rebounded right to Decker, but her follow-up shot sailed over the top of the net.
The Lady Cougars played solid defense after they got the lead, and held on for the win.
