After several years of helping area residents in need, the Clarkson Baptist Church’s clothing pantry is closing.

The pantry, behind K’s Cafe, will cease operations after Monday morning, Aug. 27. It is generally open from 9 to 11 a.m.

Church secretary Frances Jones said the pantry is closing because it’s losing its space.

“Dick Alvey had been letting us use the building free of charge,” Mrs. Jones said. However, the longtime member of the church died in late April, and the building must be sold to settle his estate.

“We haven’t figured out any solution to keeping it going,” Mrs. Jones explained. “We just have no place to go for now.”

“Customers are being encouraged to take whatever they can use” to try to reduce the inventory, she said. Any remaining clothing will be sent to other aid operations in the region.

The pantry was started several years ago by Danny Blankenship, in a storage building in back of the church. As it grew, Alvey offered the larger space.
