Three people were injured in two separate accidents over the weekend on Grayson County Roadways, including a one man who was airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital following a possible diabetic seizure.

67-year-old Charles H. Hawkins, of Hawkins Drive in Clarkson, was operating a 1999 Chevrolet small conventional cab pickup when, according to the accident report filed with the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department, he may have suffered a diabetic seizure.

Hawkins was travelling south on Barton Run Road at about 7:17 a.m. on Sunday morning when the incident occurred.

The report filed by Deputy Bryan Hammons states that Hawkins’ pickup truck ran off of the right side of the roadway before striking a group of trees.

Grayson County EMS and Clarkson Fire and Rescue worked diligently to extricate Hawkins from the wreckage. The process took a painstaking half an hour, and first responders from Air Methods of Elizabethtown, who arrived during that time to transport Hawkins, assisted in freeing him from the debris.

Hawkins was flown by helicopter to the emergency room of University Hospital in Louisville, where he was treated for multiple incapacitating injuries sustained during the accident.

Hawkins was wearing his seat belt at the time of collision, according to Hammons.

In a separate incident on Saturday afternoon, two local teenagers had to be taken by ambulance to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries.

A 2003 Ford Taurus being driven by James Boone, 19, of Pearman Road in Clarkson, was travelling east on Owensboro Road approximately five miles west of Leitchfield when the accident occurred.

The accident report, also provided by Hammons, explains that Boone lost control of the vehicle due to rain making the roadway slick.

The vehicle left the roadway and struck a fence, damaging the property belonging to Bill Manning.

Boone, who was wearing a seat belt, was treated for multiple possible injuries. His passenger, 19-year-old William Howell, of Oakhill Drive in Leitchfield, multiple non-incapacitating injuries.

Howell was also secured in a seat belt at the time of the accident.
