An escaped convict was arrested on Sunday at a Peonia Road residence following a standoff with Kentucky State Police troopers, according to KSP Trooper Norman Chaffins.
43-year-old Lonnie R. Coy, of Shelbyville, escaped nearly eight months ago from the Hardin County Detention Center, along with another inmate, Joshua Nunn, who was apprehended last November in Rineyville.
Cameras at the detention center showed the two men walking away after having dug a hole under a fence to facilitate their escape. Detention center staff later discovered, after a routine head count, that the two had escaped the facility.
At the time, Coy was serving a sentence for flagrant non-support and parole violation, but also had charges pending in other counties.
A tip came in to KSP on July 8 that Coy was staying at a Grayson County home, and further investigation led officers to the Peonia Road home where the fugitive was hiding.
“After a brief standoff with troopers,” Chaffins said, “Coy surrendered without incident.”
No one else was residing at the home, where Coy was arrested at approximately 8:25 p.m. on Sunday, according to KSP.
Chaffins said that a search of the residence revealed two stolen vehicles, drug paraphernalia, marijuana, methamphetamines, a firearm, multiple fake I.D.’s and a police scanner.
Coy was charged with escape in the second degree, manufacturing methamphetamines in the first degree, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a forged instrument in the first degree, possession of a controlled substance (meth) in the first degree, receiving stolen property over $10,000, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a police scanner.
As the investigation continues, further charges could be forthcoming. Additionally, anyone found to have assisted Coy since his escape will likely face charges of hindering prosecution/apprehension.
It is currently believed that multiple people aided Coy in evading police since the November 20 escape.
Coy was lodged briefly in the Grayson County Detention Center, and later transferred back to the Hardin County Detention Center, where he is currently being held.
