The Cougar softball team left little doubt Thursday that they were the top team in the district after a 13-0 destruction of the visiting Whitesville Trinity Lady Raiders.

With the win, the Cougars finished a perfect 6-0 in the 12th District and will be the top seed in next month’s district tournament, which will be held in Whitesville.

Jessika Young picked up the win as she shut out the visitors on just one hit over five innings. Young walked one and struck out seven. The lone hit came with one out in the first inning when shortstop Katie Wathen singled up the middle. Wathen was stranded there as Young struck out Brittany Johnson and got Haley Robey on a ground-out.

Trinity had two other base-runners in the game. Kacey Roby reached on an error with one out in the second inning, but was left at first as Young retired the next two batters. Abby Boone walked with one out in the fifth, but was left on first as Young struck out Katelyn Coomes and Alex Hamilton to end the game.

The Cougars sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning as they scored four times. Young and Jordan Decker both had RBI singles in the inning and the other two runs scored on wild pitches by starter and loser Haley Roby.

The Cougars then sent 13 batters to the plate as they put the game out of reach with an eight-run second inning. Grayson County had nine hits in the inning, two of them by Young.

Decker walked with two outs to load the bases before back-to-back singles by Amber Dotson and Myranda Ward drove in the first two runs. Alanna Mudd followed by looping a single into right-center that drove in two more.

Liza Howard replaced Roby on the mound and Kaylan Shull greeted her with a single to left that made it 9-0. That brought up right-fielder Victoria Decker, who put a charge into a 1-1 pitch from Howard and drove it out of the park in straight-away right field to make it 12-0.

Young followed with a single to right, but Howard was able to strike out Megan England to end the long inning.

The Cougars added one more run in the fourth inning. With one out, Mudd singled, her third hit of the game, and moved to second on a wild pitch. Mudd moved to third on a two out error, then scored when Young’s fly ball to right was dropped for another error.

The win was the Cougars’ 2oth of the season against three losses and one tie.
