The Cougar baseball team stayed perfect in district play on Wednesday as they blanked the visiting Whitesville Trinity Raiders 4-0 at Don Lee Field.
Sophomore right-hander Joseph Anthony had one of his best outings on the mound as he held the Raiders scoreless for seven innings. Anthony allowed just four hits and struck out eight.
The Raiders put a man at third base with two outs in the second inning, but Anthony struck out opposing pitcher Drew Mills to end that threat.
Trinity had runners at first and second with no outs in the sixth inning, but Anthony retired the next three batters in a row to put out that fire.
In the seventh inning, the visitors loaded the bases with two outs, but again, Anthony killed the rally by striking out Dalton Payne to end the game.
The Cougars gave Anthony all the run support he would need with a pair of runs in the second inning. Justin Calvert led off with a double to the gap in right center. Jameson Van Meter followed by grounding to shortstop Nathaniel Mills. As Mills made the throw to first, Calvert took off for third, and when the throw was high over the head of first-baseman Branden Wright, Calvert scored and Van Meter was safe at first.
Logan Ramsey followed with a single to left, moving Van Meter to second, and when Wyatt Skaggs singled up the middle, Van Meter scored to make it 2-0.
The Cougars made it 3-0 in the third inning on back-to-back doubles by Dalton Logsdon and Jakob Clemons. Grayson County later had runners at the corners, but Ramsey popped out to end the inning.
Grayson County scored once more in the fourth inning after two were out. Third-baseman Joey Henry singled, then scored all the way from first on a double to the wall in center by Logsdon.
The Cougars now stand at 17-6 for the season and are a perfect 4-0 in district play. They head to Northern Kentucky this weekend for play in the Bryan Stevenson Memorial Tournament.
