“We resurfaced several streets last year and are looking forward to installing welcome signs at all the entrances, “ said City Clerk Brenda Brown. “The biggest thing we have coming up this year is the waste water treatment plan overhaul.”
During 2008, the city of Caneyville began the year in a new building located at 304 East Maple Street.
The city was able to update the firehouse with a new roof and electrical equipment. The ball park received some needed attention when the walking track was resurfaced and electrical boxes were updated.
“We also joined the Cloths line of quilts with the quilt pattern we added to the side of the firehouse in June,” added Brown.
The biggest project of last year was the manhole cover refurbishment.
The commissioners were told that in several spots around the city the manhole covers were found to allow the water to enter the system.
Some of the problems cited include: broken rings on manhole covers, leaky pipes, ditch water flowing into clean-out pipes and some manholes below flood plane level.
While the city has worked to correct and repair many of the problems that have arisen with the system, the treatment plant is still facing the problem of excessive inflow, a problem that is simply overtaxing the plant.
The annual Caneyville Fair, which is held the first week in October, was especially important for Caneyville, because it was the 75th anniversary.
According to Caneyville Community Club President Deborah Lambert, attendance levels were at about 3,000 people a night.
Because of higher attendance numbers the club was able to raise over $800 for the Christmas for Kids program.
