A fourth-quarter Grayson County comeback came up just short Monday night as the Lady Cougars saw their eight-game win streak snapped by the Lady Aces of Owensboro Catholic, 39-36 in Owensboro.

Trailing by seven points with less than five minutes left in the game, Grayson County scored six straight to pull to within a point of the lead. After two Catholic free throws made it a three -point game, the Lady Cougars still had nine seconds to try for the tie, but Shelbi Tyra’s attempt came up short.

This was a game of streaks from start to finish. The Lady Cougars opened the game by scoring the first eight points, only to see the Lady Aces score 10 unanswered to close out the first quarter with a 10-8 lead.

A three-point play by Martina Riney at the 3:31 mark of the second period completed a 17-2 run by the Lady Aces and gave them a 17-10 lead.

Grayson County responded with another streak of their own, closing out the half with a 9-2 run that tied the score 19-19 at the half.

The Lady Aces then opened the second half with 10 straight points to lead 29-19 with 4:17 left in the period. Grayson County was able to whittle it down to six points, 31-25 as the fourth quarter began.

The Lady Cougars got to within four, 34-30 on a Tyra turn-around jumper with six minutes left, but Jessica Goetz hit a three-pointer with 4:53 remaining to make it a seven-point game, 37-30.

The Lady Cougars then held Catholic scoreless for nearly five minutes and pulled to within a point of the lead, 37-36 on two Tyra free throws with 22 seconds remaining.

The Lady Cougars then began fouling to try to put the Lady Aces at the line and finally succeeded with 9.2 second showing on the clock. Greenwell hit both shots in the bonus to give the Lady Aces a three-point lead.

The Lady Cougars had to have a three-pointer. Tyra brought the ball up the court and tried to take a shot. Even if her awkward shot had gone in, her foot was on the line and would only have counted for two. When it failed to go in, the game was over.

Goetz led the Lady Aces with 12 points, while Greenwell had 11.

Tyra led all scorers in the game with 16 points and made it a double-double night with 13 rebounds. Sarah Taylor hit three three-pointers to finish with nine points. Hannah Anderson had six points while Chelsea Pharris had five to close out the scoring.
