Mayor Bonnie Henderson explained when it rained that David Sanchez’s backyard of his home, located on Second Street, collected up to four feet of water. Another property, located on the same street, had collapsed tile, causing the flooding issue for Sanchez.
The third home, also on Second Street, has been experiencing drainage problems for some time.
Henderson added that some of the concrete (at the property causing the flooding issue) would have to be replaced, and the city would also need to do drainage work.
Commissioner Robert Vincent used to own the Sanchez property, and the area has always flooded.
Commissioners approved the motion to investigate costs for all of the improvements, and fix all three problems immediately.
Commissioner Kay Gibson recommended the city supplying the labor. The commission agreed to find out how much the resident, with the collapsed tile, would be willing to pay for the materials.
In other business:
• There will be no garbage pick up in Clarkson for January 19, because the transfer station will be closed.
• Commissioners were appointed to specific governmental departments in the city.
Vincent will be over parks, Keith Higdon-sewer, Scotty Gore-roads, Kay Gibson-fire department, and Henderson police.
Gore was also appointed as Mayor Pro-tem.
• The first reading of an ordinance to close a portion of Second Street, behind the elementary school, was accepted.
Henderson explained the portion of the plated road from Skaggs Street to Highway 62 is not being used.
The second reading of the ordinance will have to be approved first, before the road is officially closed.
Gore said once the new elementary school is built, a new road will be poured going into the school. The plan is to name it after the Clarkson Red Hawk, which is the school’s mascot.
• Private donations have been made in the amount of $850 for the Clarkson Community Park.
Henderson plans to have a tree planted, and a seating area constructed for families to enjoy.
• The commissioners are also collecting items for a time capsule that will commemorate the history of the city.
Items can be dropped off at Clarkson City Hall.
