The draft for the 2009-10 school budget was presented to the Grayson County Board of Education during the regular board meeting Thursday night.

The potential four percent loss of state funding was discussed with the proposed budged reflected this loss so the school system can prepare accordingly

Grayson County School Board Financial Officer Kerry White said there are talks of the state cutting book funding.

White also addressed the continual financial decline in the food service department.

Food Service Director Kristy Hodges spoke about purchasing of new equipment this year that has caused some of the financial strain.

“We felt there was a need to purchase the new equipment rather than spend money on maintenance, “ said Hodges

She also reported the cost to prepare a meal was $2.57 and the school system is only reimbursed $2.47 by the state for each free or reduced lunch.

The board also approved Presidents Day, February 16th to be used as a make-up day instead of being used as scheduled as a professional day.

The board also changed the last day of school to May 26, which will give the students three extra attendance days if needed.

An additional Title I position was approved for the Caneyville Elementary staff for the rest of the school year.

The part-time teacher and instructional aide will be paid out of money the school must spend. The position will only be temporary and may end in May 2009.

A new style of breakfast will be available for the students at Wilkey Elementary.

Hodges reported she had applied for and received a $500 grant that will allow for a “grab and go” breakfast option that students will allow to take to their classroom.

The high school already has a “grab and go” breakfast in-place at this time.
