Two people were taken to a Louisville-area hospital early Tuesday, following a car crash on Brandenburg Road just north of Embry Acres Drive.

According to Detective Kevin Smith of the Leitchfield Police Department, Rodney Tomes, 30, of Leitchfield was headed south on Brandenburg Road abut 12:30 a.m. when he fell asleep at the wheel.

The car Tomes was driving then left the road on the northbound side and struck an embankment.

He and a passenger in the car, 20-year-old Sherry Wilkins of Leitchfield, were trapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated by the Leitchfield Fire Department.

Both had serious injuries. They were initially taken to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center, and then transferred to Louisville. Further information on their conditions was not available Tuesday.

Smith said the accident remains under investigation.
