Recruiting Manager Kevin Stillman said the bureau is required every 10 years, by the U.S. Constitution, to count each person living in the United States.
Each job assignment will last for eight to 10 weeks, but people can move onto another assignment when that one expires.
“What we do is have individuals all over the state,” he explained. “We recruit people to work in their own area.”
They are several open positions available, and depending on the job, the pay ranges from $8.50 to $12 an hour.
Hours will vary for each job. Even though positions are temporary, some jobs may require close to 40 hours of work.
The first operation the census bureau will be hiring for is address canvassing. Individuals will have to verify a home is still physically at the address provided. It also allows the organization to find out about new homes built in that particular area.
“We will start the hiring process in February of next year,” Stillman added, “and will train new employees starting the end of February.”
Interested applicants must first schedule an appointment to take an employment test at a predetermined job site in the area. The testing is done to evaluate each person on what position they qualify for.
In order to qualify for the job, people must be 18 years of age, have a valid social security number, and be able to pass a background check.
The local census office for Grayson County will open in late 2008.
In March 2009 employees will start their positions, but Stillman said there will be supervisors above them readily available if need be,
“We want to make sure everyone gets counted,” he explained. “It helps with government-money distribution in the area. It also allows us to appropriately portion so many people to each congressman. It is a long detailed process we go through. We want to try to get people hired for assignments in their neighborhood.”
